The Stamford Fire Department received a report at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 16, of dark black smoke that was spreading from the basement to the rest of the West Haviland Lane home.
Crews from the Long Ridge Fire Company, Stamford and Turn of River Fire Departments responded to the home, with units arriving within 10 minutes of the initial report. Officials said that firefighters found a working fire in the basement of the home, prompting a call for additional support from New Canaan, Pound Ridge and Banksville.
Firefighters were able to quickly knock down the flames and ventilated the home. Crews remained at the scene to check for any hot spots or flare-ups until clearing the scene at approximately 6:50 p.m.
In total, seven engine companies, one truck company, the heavy rescue company, five tankers, the Long Ridge chief, and the duty city deputy chief responded with a total of 45 firefighters.
No injuries were reported, though the family was forced to find temporary housing until repairs can be made. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
